Nobel Peace Prize 2009

This must be the most exciting news week in Norway since I moved here; can it get much better than this?

The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced that the U.S. President Barack Obama has won the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize for "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples".

Barack Obama is coming to Norway!

By the way: four of the five members of the Nobel Committee are women. Just sayin'.

Haha :-) I'm sure Mr. Jagland wasn't too difficult to convince.

Although, I wonder what Obama said when he was woken up and told in the wee hours this morning. Oh shit?

I appreciate their reasoning, and am a huge Obama fan, but they may just have made his job A LOT harder.

I don't know, Johanna... Personally, I am disappointed by Obama's selection for the NPP. I like and admire my President, but it's too soon in his administration, he hasn't actually DONE enough (two wars still going on and all that), and it won't help him politically at home at a very crucial time. (A Peace Prize? Given by the EUROPEANS? Means very little to Obama's adversaries.) I think he won simply for not being George W. Bush. In my opinion, there were others who were far more deserving of this prize.

Michele - I understand your disappointment and you are not alone in your view; many writing online agree with you. Personally, I am so excited over what this means for someone living in Norway i.e. ME, as being the best place in the world to live can make it a tad un-newsworthy; this is not a bad thing unless you are journalist. However, as it approaches 9 AM in Washington, I'm getting a bit suspicious of the lack of noise coming from the White House. Could he be considering turning the prize down?
Thanks for your comments Batgirl and Bus :)

He accepted it of course and so presumably will be in Oslo in Dec to accept the Prize. That will be some party!

it is really so stupid, but if you check the history of Nobel i think it is so normal

I would have to agree with Michele, Elly and many others around the world. This is a misplaced prize. You shouldn't get the Nobel Peace Prize for good intentions. I'm sure there were other candidates who had actually done something.

I like B.O. and I see both himself and Michelle are trying to claim Irish roots (who doesn't want to be Irish? :-)

But I do agree that it seems premature...he shouldn't get it until peace is a reality. John Hume got it for being instrumental in brokering a peace deal in Northern Ireland. There was actual peace there and a situation had been changed.

With Barack he isn't long enough in office yet...I say give him a chance let's see this change he was preaching about before rewarding him for talking about it!

Said it already, I love mr o, but the Nobel peace prize??? this just goes to show how ignorant some Norwegians can be...
